History of Nuclear
Medicine in Bangladesh |
|
The first nuclear medicine center of the country
was established in 1962 in Dhaka Medical College.
The establishment was developed under PAEC
(Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission) & named ‘Atomic Energy Medical
Centre’.
In 1970 two more Centres were established, one in port city of
Chittagong & one in northern city of Rajshahi.
At that time Centres were equipped with
uptake system, probe renography, rectilinear scanner & Ion exchange
column for PBI.By 1980 Bangladesh established three more Centres in Dinajpur, Sylhet & the prestigious Institute of Nuclear
Medicine in IPGMR, Dhaka.
First computerized gamma camera was
established in INM (Institute of Nuclear Medicine) in 1980.
RIA (Radioimmunoassay) &
Ultrasound was first time introduced in Bangladesh by the same
Institute.
Eight new Centres were developed in the last
decade of past millennium by BAEC.
All the Nuclear Medicine are in the campus of government
run undergraduate & post graduate Medical College under Health
Ministry. |

Development in the new millennium
The new millennium saw the strengthening of currently available NM
service in Bangladesh.
As ultrasound was first introduced in Bangladesh by BAEC and
Ultrasound services were simultaneously developed under the roof of BAEC, recently all the
Nuclear Medicine Centre were renamed Centre
for Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound (CNMU).
Institute of Nuclear Medicine is renamed Institute of Nuclear Medicine
and Ultrasound (INMU). Institute & Centres now provide general
ultrasound, obstetrical ultrasound, high resolution ultrasound,
intervention & Color Doppler ultrasound services.
INMU is undergoing extensive BMRE with acquisition of multiple SPECT
(including dual head), BMD, multiple Color Doppler (including 4-D),
multiple gamma well counters for RIA & in vitro studies.
The new building site of INMU with floor area of 50,000 sq ft is
currently nearing completion.
Four old CNMU (including Chittagong & Rajshahi) are currently undergoing
modernization with increase in manpower, space & equipment
Modernization of five other CNMUs are also under government development
plan of this budget year.
All these CNMU are going to be equipped with multiple new SPECT cameras,
gamma well counter, BMD, Color Doppler (including 4-D). |

Nuclear Medicine today
Today,
nuclear medicine became an integral part of patient care, and an important
diagnostic and therapeutic specialty in the armamentarium of medical science
in the country.
We
have 14 different NM establishments under the umbrella of BAEC along with
two privately run NM departments.
If you
look at the map of the country, you will see that we cover all flanks of the
country with Centre from Dinajpur in the north to Chittagong in south and
from Sylhet in the east to Khulna in the west. |
